Each month we study and share our wonder at the history and nature of our universe as more and more of its secrets are revealed to science.
It is an exciting time in Cosmology with lots of new observations being made against which established theories can be tested. As a small group of interested onlookers, we are reactive to these new developments and share our knowledge and understanding with the group and together challenge our fundamental thinking about the origins, underlying nature and development of the universe. Our breadth of interest is broad, from the smallest quantum scales to the largest structures in the universe.
For example last year we discussed the observation of the oldest galaxies ever seen (ONLY 200 million years after the Big Bang!) by the James Webb Space Telescope. These new observations challenged established thinking on galaxy formation and posed the possibility of a role for black holes in the early universe. Ongoing themes discussed by the group include quantum spacetime, sources of dark matter, gravitational wave detection and the requirements for life beyond our planet.
