Our speaker this month is Peter Griffith, who is giving us a presentation entitled Sextant to Sat Nav, 45 years in Aviation. Peter started flying in 1967 for BOAC, the forerunner of British Airways, and his career spanned the time from when aircraft were navigated by map, compass and sextant to the highly sophisticated aircraft of today, accurate to within a few feet. After leaving BOAC as a First Officer and Flight Navigator he joined Cathay Pacific, based in Hong Kong where he spent the next 29 years, during which time he rose to Fleet Manager B747, managing 19 aircraft and training and checking other pilots. He later flew executive jets until his retirement.
If you’re wondering about the picture, it shows the tricky landing at runway 13 at Kai Tak, the old airport at Hong Kong, apparently an aviation legend. Despite his high flying career he admits to a fear of heights!
