Our Speaker this month is Andy Thomas, who is giving us a presentation entitled Christmas: A Festive History. Andy has spoken to us before about the Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations and about English Freedom. This time, he will be uncovering the intriguing background to the festive season.
From the ancient midwinter celebration of light to the marking of the birth of a Messiah, mid-December has long been a time of rituals and rejoicing. Christmas celebrations were banned in Puritan times, and it was the Victorians who rehabilitated the festival into what it has become today. Despite all the commercialisation, Andy shows how we can still find meaning in Christmas.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Bat & Ball Centre, with tea and cake being served afterwards. I do hope you will join us.
